Department for International Trade Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU)

The Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU), administers the HM Government’s system of export controls and licensing of controlled strategic goods, such as military and dual-use items and implements licensing for trade sanctions. It brings together policy and operational expertise from the Department for International Trade (DIT), the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Ministry of Defence (MOD).

The ECJU’s purpose is to facilitate the responsible exports of strategic goods and through this promote global security. This is done through a licensing system, ensuring UK exports are consistent with our national and international obligations and standards. We rigorously assess every licence application on a case-by-case basis against the Strategic Export Licensing Criteria.

We can provide advice on:

  • Licences or permissions required – which types of items or activities are controlled and need a licence
  • restrictions on trade with particular countries because of sanctions or embargoes, or other restrictive measures
  • due diligence regarding risks of trade with specific end users.
  • We also conduct outreach to industry, and auditing of certain licence holders.
