The Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) at the University of Surrey is an International Centre of Excellence for research in Audio-Visual Artificial Intelligence (AI), with 180 researchers and a grant portfolio of £26m.  CVSSP has contributed world-leading research and pioneered ground-breaking technologies in partnership with the UK industry. CVSSP is ranked 1st in the UK for Computer Vision (, and has won international challenges/awards for both audio and visual AI.

CVSSP forms a core of the Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence recently established at the University of Surrey. The aim of this Institute is to put people at the heart of future solutions to ensure that Artificial Intelligence delivers human values and benefit for both the individual and society as a whole.  

Among its wide-ranging activities, CVSSP has been engaged in a nationally leading EPSRC sponsored research programme in face recognition and person re-identification for safety and security in public spaces. The results generated by the programme in collaboration with the Home Office CAST, are now commercialised by a Surrey University spinout, Sensus Futuris.
