The Centre for Applied Science and Technology (CAST)
The Home Office Centre for Applied Science and Technology (CAST) provides expert scientific and technical support to the Home Office, police forces and other government departments. We are involved in cutting-edge research and development work, often with national security as the principal concern.
CAST’s role is as the primary S&T interface between Home Office Ministers and policy formulation; frontline operational decision makers; and the external suppliers of science and technology. CAST engages in S&T activities that cannot be undertaken by others, be that because of our impartiality; market failure; national security; or our ability to access Ministers, policy makers or operational users and their ways of working. CAST provides this support through a combination of projects and services designed and prioritised to meet the needs of our customers.
From April 2018, CAST will integrate with the Defence Science Technology Laboratory.
The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl)
The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is the UK’s leading Government agency responsible for delivering high-impact science and technology for the UK’s defence, security and prosperity.
Dstl brings together the defence and security S&T community, including industry, academia, wider Government and international partners, to provide sensitive and specialist S&T services to MOD and wider Government.
From 1 April 2018, the Centre for Applied Science and Technology (CAST) will join Dstl from the Home Office, bringing in further S&T support for policing and crime prevention.
